Biography
"We all do better when we all do better." - Paul Wellstone
Zachary Beaudoin (they/them) is a PhD student in the Political Science Department at Colorado State University, specializing in environmental politics, comparative politics, and public policy. Growing up on a farm in Western New York, Zachary's early life was shaped by a strong connection to nature and community. Initially planning to join the US Army Reserve full-time, Zachary's interest in global conflicts and societal issues led them to pivot towards higher education. This shift was fueled by a deep curiosity about how the world works and the desire to understand and address the complex challenges faced by their community and beyond.
Zachary pursued a Bachelor’s degree at a state university, where supportive mentors encouraged them to explore societal and environmental issues more deeply. Their academic journey took them to Columbia University, where they earned a Master of Science in Negotiation and Conflict Resolution. Here, Zachary honed their skills in community engagement, conflict transformation, and social movements, which further solidified their passion for environmental stewardship and advocacy.
Currently residing in the foothills of Colorado with their wife and two dogs, Zachary draws inspiration from the local ecosystem, including frequent encounters with wildlife such as bears, Stellar’s jays, and turkeys. Their connection to the environment is also expressed through photography, capturing the beauty of nature and highlighting the urgent need for its preservation. Zachary's work can be seen at Beaux Medias.
Zachary’s diverse experiences—ranging from political campaign work and serving on county councils to building community gardens and volunteering as a restorative justice facilitator—reflect a commitment to using their blue-collar background, life experiences, and academic training to address complex environmental and social issues. They are particularly passionate about developing policies that support rural communities, ensuring that these communities have a voice in the political process, access to essential resources, and opportunities for sustainable development.
Their academic and professional journey has also been shaped by their experience of developing a disability, which, along with pursuing a certificate in Managing for Social Equity at the University of Colorado, has deepened their understanding of the intersections of power, justice, and democracy. This perspective informs their approach to policy advocacy, focusing on creating inclusive, equitable, and sustainable solutions for diverse communities.
As a Graduate Teaching Assistant at Colorado State University, Zachary is committed to fostering critical thinking and engagement among students, encouraging them to explore complex political issues and appreciate diverse perspectives. Their career aspirations include teaching, research, and policy advocacy, with a focus on improving the lives of both rural and urban communities through inclusive public service and sustainable practices.
