POLS 449-Middle East Politics - Syllabus
This course examines political, economic and social issues of the Middle East. After examining the emergence of the modern state in the region, the course focuses on a variety of issues, including the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, Islamism, democratization/political liberalization, economic development, gender, and the question of nuclear proliferation. General readings applicable to the whole region are accompanied by case-specific readings on Egypt, Jordan, the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood, Turkey and Iran.
POLS-540 Graduate Seminar on Comparative Politics - Syllabus
This graduate seminar is an introduction to the subfield of comparative politics. It is designed to provide an overview of major conceptual, methodological, and theoretical tools used in the advanced study of comparing cases.
POLS 241-Introduction to Comparative Governments and Politics - Syllabus
This course introduces key concepts, issues and trends in comparative politics by using five countries as case studies. The course is organized around the following themes covered in the assigned book: states, nation and society, political economy, authoritarianism and totalitarianism, democracy, advanced democracies, communism and postcommunism, less developed and newly industrializing countries, and political violence. Five countries, namely Britain, Russia, Nigeria, Mexico and Egypt are examined as case studies.
