Student Experience in Political Science

Your political science experience extends far beyond the classroom. Whether you're interning at the Colorado State Capitol, studying abroad, preparing for law school, joining a student organization, or connecting with faculty mentors, you'll have opportunities to apply what you learn in meaningful ways. These experiences help you explore your interests, build professional connections, and discover how politics, policy, and public service can make a difference in communities locally and around the world.

Internships

Step beyond the classroom and experience politics, policy, and public service in action.

Political Science internships allow students to apply their coursework while gaining hands-on experience, building professional networks, and exploring potential career paths. By working alongside elected officials, public administrators, nonprofit leaders, and policy professionals, students apply what they learn in the classroom while building valuable experience and professional connections.

Pre-Law Path

Thinking about law school? CSU's Pre-Law Path provides the guidance, experiences, and community to help you prepare for the next step. Students benefit from personalized advising, an active Pre-Law Club, internship opportunities, and resources designed to support exploration of legal careers and the law school application process. Law schools do not require a specific major for admission—students pursue a wide range of academic backgrounds, with Political Science, History, English, and Sociology among the most common. A key part of the program is the Legal Studies Minor, which explores legal systems, public policy, and the role of law in society.

Pre-Law Advisor

Gina Robinson, J.D., serves as CSU's Pre-Law Advisor and is available to help students explore legal careers, prepare for law school, and navigate the application process. Students interested in pursuing law are encouraged to connect with her as early as the end of their first year to begin planning their path.

Education Abroad

Political Science students have the opportunity to extend their learning beyond the classroom through CSU-approved study abroad programs curated by faculty. These experiences allow students to explore politics, law, and international relations in global contexts while earning transferable CSU credit. Programs vary in location, duration, cost, and format, including classroom study, research, and service-learning opportunities.

Comparative Legal Studies in Italy

In this faculty-led study abroad experience,  Gina Robinson guides students on an international trip to explore how legal systems function in Italy and the United States while examining how courts operate across different political and cultural contexts. Classroom learning is paired with academic and cultural site visits, including court observations and visits to legal institutions and law firms.

Semester at Sea

Experience multiple cultures and countries in one education abroad experience by sailing the world on Semester at Sea’s traveling campus. Aboard the Semester at Sea ship, students will take classes while sailing between countries and then apply their classroom studies to the countries they visit. CSU is the proud home of Semester at Sea, so all academic credits taken aboard the ship will transfer for CSU students.

Student Organizations & Community

Whatever your interests are now, or whatever new ones you discover once on campus, our political science clubs offer a great way to connect with your peers and build the connections and expertise to make the most of your time at CSU.

Pre-law Club

Connect with a community of students who share your interest in law and the legal profession. The Pre-Law Club offers opportunities to explore legal careers, prepare for the law school application process, and learn more about the LSAT through workshops, guest speakers, networking events, and internship connections. Members regularly meet with attorneys, judges, law students, and admissions representatives while building relationships with peers pursuing similar goals.

To join the mailing list, contact the Pre-Law Club president through RamLink. Follow @CSUprelawclub on Instagram to learn more about the student organization.

Model UN Club

Model UN is a club where students roleplay as various states or people in a committee. These committees can range from climate change discussions to a simulation of 15th-century politics and involve debate, communication, and writing skills.
